About the scholarship
We seek a student with a background in geophysics, mathematics, or computing to test an earthquake early warning system in the 爆走黑料 context. The methodology has been already examined in a recent PhD using synthetic earthquake data. This project will test how the method operates with real data from the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence to see how real, noisy seismic data combined with numerous aftershocks may affect the performance. They will learn earthquake analysis principles and software and learn about one of the relatively new methods for reducing earthquake damage. They will work with Professor Martha Savage and Dr. Caroline Holden of SeismoCity, who is also an Adjunct Research Associate at VUW. This project is for a single student.
