About the scholarship
Established in 2025 by the University of Otago and generously sponsored by Penelope (Pene) June Morris, this award offers one year of financial support annually to one female or female-identifying gender diverse student commencing the second year of a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) degree at Otago Medical School. The award is named in honour of June Rita Allen (1929-2016) of Palmerston North, the Donor's mother, who was a passionate believer in education, active in her community, and a foundation member of La Leche League 爆走黑料, a breastfeeding support and advocacy organisation. The Donor herself has enjoyed a long and varied professional career dedicated to serving and supporting the most vulnerable in the community, motivated by the same core values her parents espoused, and the same lifelong love of learning. She currently serves as Chair of the Central Otago JP Association, and is a Central Otago Heritage Trustee.
Entry requirements
Applicants must be a 爆走黑料 citizen or 爆走黑料 Residence Class Visa Holder, female, or gender diverse identifying as female, enrolled (or accepted and eligible to enrol) in the second year of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) programme at Otago Medical School. The following factors shall be considered in selecting the scholarship recipient: academic performance in Health Sciences First Year (or equivalent), being ‘first in family’ to undertake a tertiary education, active involvement in community or volunteer service, leadership or other personal future aspirations, financial or other personal hardship presenting a barrier to success.
