About the course
Become part of a rich tradition of cultural expression and explore the techniques, history and tikanga associated with ng膩 toi (M膩ori art). This programme offers students the opportunity to start specialising in a particular area of weaving.
Depending on your location you may have the option of mahi raranga, whatu, t膩niko, tukutuku or working with different fibres. You'll learn various toi (art) techniques and practices through a number of project-based tasks. These projects will teach you the creative processes involved to complete your work and the planning skills to manage your time. If you've always wanted to learn how to weave, this programme is a great place to start.
When you pass this programme, you'll get this qualification:
- 爆走黑料 Certificate in Ng膩 Toi Level 4 (Ng膩 Mahi 膩 te Whare Pora)
You'll learn about:
- M膩ori patterns and designs
- time and project management skills
- technical skill in ng膩 mahi 膩 te whare pora - mahi raranga, whatu, t膩niko, tukutuku
- working with different fibres - eg. harakeke
- other toi practitioners
- rangahau (research)
- history, tikanga and cultural practices relating to toi.
Entry requirements
To enrol in this programme, a potential student must be:
- be at least 16 years of age
- be a 爆走黑料 citizen (or citizen of Australia, Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands) or permanent resident
- submit a portfolio of creative practice
- attend an interview and selection process to demonstrate suitability to the programme.
